Five Best Skating Rinks in the West End

One of the coldest winters in many years is upon us. While it may be tempting to spend your free time hibernating indoors with the TV on, it’s not great for your mental or physical well-being.

Why not get outside and enjoy some good old-fashioned Canadian winter fun? The City of Toronto is doing its part to help with that regard.

For instance, did you know that Toronto has almost 60 city-run rinks? All are well maintained, and a great way to have fun while getting some exercise in.

Some of those rinks are right here in the West End, either a short drive away or easily accessible by public transit. Ready to lace up your skates and enjoy the cold weather for once?

Here are Five of the Best Skating Rinks in the West End

Bentway Skate Trail

Who would have ever imagined a winter oasis could exist under the hectic traffic of the Gardiner Expressway? A 220-metre figure-eight trail delights skaters at every level. Unlike regular rinks, you don’t have to skate relentlessly around in a circle. The rink’s unique design allows you to change directions and take in more of the view around you. The Bentway Trail has many features to attract skaters. For instance, they offer free rentals every Thursday between 5-8. You get two for one skate rentals every Wednesday if you have a Presto card. To top it all off, CityPlace Fort York BIA is there to help you warm up with free hot chocolate. Can you imagine a better way to spend a chilly evening? Pre-registration is not required.

Harbourfront Natrel Rink

Harbourfront Natrel Rink is the largest outdoor rink in Canada, and one of the most scenic. You can glide around the ice while you enjoy the view of the Toronto skyline on one side, and the beautiful waterfront on the other. Located near the concert stage at Harbourfront South Orchard, this rink is easily accessible by transit, with plenty of parking if you choose to drive. Heated change rooms and restrooms are available.

Whether you’re looking for an idea for date night, or just want to have fun with friends (or by yourself), you can beat skating around to music by the water!

There is no admission charge if you bring your own skates, and rentals are provided for a small fee.

If you need a break, you can enjoy some hot refreshments at Lakeside Eats.

High Park Rink

Located at 300 Colborne Lodge Drive, the best part about this rink is that it’s divided into two sections. There is a walled area for hockey enthusiasts and a separate space for leisure skaters. This means you can skate around without worrying about getting hit with a puck or run over by an overenthusiastic player trying to score a goal. Supervised shinny is also available for parents with children eight and under. Since it is a smaller rink, you must bring your own skates as there are no rentals. However, the rink is usually not crowded, which means you can skate without bumping into others.

Rennie Park Rink

Rennie Park Rink is very unique, rivalling some of the large skating loops we hear so much about. The pleasure skating side surrounds a giant tree, making it very scenic to glide around under the moonlight. The rink is located at 1 Rennie Terrace. There is also a side for hockey players to shinny or hone their skating chops. The Zamboni runs twice a day, meaning the ice is always in prime condition. Bring your own skates, and be prepared for hours of winter fun.

Queensway Park Rink and Trail

The brand new (as of 2018) skating park just off the Queensway West near Royal York is one of Toronto’s best-kept secrets! With a separate area for shinny, this trail is perfect for skaters of all levels, and it’s rarely crowded. Located in one of Toronto’s most beautiful parks, the loop through a wooded area provides a scenic view during your time on the ice.

Whether you’re looking for an afternoon of leisure or a heart-pumping workout, skating is a fantastic way to spend your day. Once you try out one of the rinks above, you’ll be hooked for life. You may just find yourself falling in love with Canadian winters again!
